Dolores Maria ‘Lolita’ Peña Maya, 90, resident of Chicago, IL., passed away peacefully at home on July 15, 2020 surrounded by her loving family.
Dolores was born on April 6, 1930 in Chicago, IL to Bernabe Velasquez and Virgina Pasillas. As a result of the Great Depression in the 1930’s, her parents made the decision to head back to their home country of Mexico accompanied by her siblings. Dolores was married at the age of 15 and widowed shortly after.
In search of better life chances for her children, she left Mexico and returned to Chicago, IL. to chase a dream where she could provide everything and more to her three children living in Mexico by working as an assembler at a factory. This journey was one of the many examples of how she embodied strong womanhood and would do anything for her family.
She will be lovingly remembered as a true transmitter of family values and traditions. She always had a way of bringing the family together seamlessly whether it be to play poker or making mole and rice to celebrate a birthday. Long conversations on the phone with her will be missed by family and her comadres. She leaves behind a long legacy of strong and empowered grandchildren who will always carry with them the traditions that their ‘gremma’ taught them.
Dolores was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years Phillip Maya; two children, Alejandro Del Castillo and Maria Elena Rodriguez; and her grandchild, Hector Rodriguez.
She is survived by her children Rogelio (María Esther) Díaz del Castillo Velasquez, Felipe ‘Paco’ (Teresa) Peña II, and Victor (Mariza) Peña; grandchildren Fatima Del Castillo, Linda Guzman, Elizabeth Rodriguez, Nicole Peña, Elisa Peña, Vanessa Peña, Deanna Peña, Veronica Peña, and Felipe Peña III; and 12 great-grandchildren.
