Anna Demasy, 91, resident of Chicago, IL, passed away Sunday, December 1, 2019. Anna Demasy was born May 2, 1928 in Taranto, Italy to Francesco and Marianna (Anzelmo) Sapone, the youngest of four daughters. She was a high school graduate. Everyone in her family called her “Nina”.
At the age of 13, her Aunt Stella taught her how to sew. At the age of 18, with her older sister Julia, she began a dressmaking business that would prosper for 15 years. Her clientele would include all prominent women in society.
On August 5, 1961, Anna married Chicagoan Joseph Demasy in Taranto, Italy. In 1962 she moved to Chicago. For three years she worked in factories for Zenith, Motorola, Hart Schaffner Marx, and Slidematic Products. She stopped working to raise a family. On October 7, 1969, Anna officially became a United States Citizen.
Anna was a very beautiful, intelligent, and kind woman. She was a very happy, loving, and devoted wife and mother who would always sing and whistle while keeping house. She was an excellent cook and loved to garden. Anna was also very playful. She loved to play games, music, dance, tell jokes and stories. She was also very religious, she loved children and animals. Anna was raised in a very close-knit family. While living in Chicago, she was in touch with all the members of her extended family in Italy as well as at home. She called the United States “home”. She was a 15-year member of The Women of the Moose, a 46-year resident of The Villa in Old Irving Park, and a member of St. Viator’s Church in Chicago.
Anna is survived by her son Anthony Demasy, Chicago, IL; daughter-In-Law Corazon Dionido, Chicago, IL; daughter Annie Demasy, Chicago, IL; grandchildren Melissa Nagy, Darien, IL, Michael and Anthony Demasy, Chicago, IL; and countless cousins, nieces, and nephews both in Italy and the U.S.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, Joseph, who passed away December 9, 2013; both of her parents; her sisters Grace, Julia, and Pearl; aunts Pearl, Angelina, Stella, Maria, and Carmella; uncles John, Frank, Vito, Vincent, Dominick, and Luigi; sister-in-law Julia; brothers-in-law Michael, Mario, Michael, and Arthur; cousins Gabriel, Julietta, Julia, Mary, Joe, and Rose; nephews Frank and Cosimo; niece Josephina.
