On Monday, July 22 2019, Jose Rosbel “Charlie” Raygoza, age 69, passed away peacefully in Chicago surrounded by his family.
Jose was born in Gomez Palacios, Mexico on April 27th, 1951 to Federico and Delia (Gamboa) Raygoza. While in Mexico, Jose met the love of his life, Manuela Mata. They were married soon after and moved to Chicago, Illinois. Jose was a self-taught chef who found success at the Davis Street Fish Market, where he became the executive chef, renowned for his cajun and creole food. Through his years as a chef, Charlie touched the hearts of coworkers and customers alike through his humor and kindhearted spirit. In February of 2004, Charlie was crowned Mardi Gras king of Evanston, Illinois during the Mardi Gras celebration hosted in honor of the New Orleans tradition. Charlie had the honor of catering the celebration and meeting the mayor of Evanston.
Charlie is preceded in death by his mother, Delia (Gamboa) Raygoza, father, Federico Raygoza, and brothers, Federico Raygoza and Cesar Raygoza. Left to honor and remember Charlie’s spirit are his wife, Manuela Mata; three children, Cesar Raygoza, Sandra Raygoza and Carolina Raygoza; eight grandchildren; Christopher Raygoza, Jessica Larocco, Sabrina Larocco, Victoria Raygoza, Johnathan Raygoza, Alexis Raygoza, Izel Sotello and Josue Raygoza; two great grandchildren: Ava De Santiago and Mia Raygoza; and many nieces and nephews.
